Queanbeyan tech start-up Smart Delivery System (SDS) has created the online shopper's dream – a secure box that collects deliveries for you when you're not home.

It was the idea of the company's owner Bob Campbell, with the team working on it for two years and releasing the final product to the market this week.

Chief operating officer Gordon Campbell said the product is about removing the annoying trip to the post office to retrieve parcels.

"We're not the first to try and solve this problem. Australia Post Parcel Locker banks go halfway but it's still inconvenient to make a trip to collect your goods – it all wastes time, energy and money," he said.

The boxes can be secured permanently or temporarily out the front of a house – unfortunately they haven't solved the issue for apartments yet – and can even replace a mailbox, with a smaller slot for regular mail.

They come in four colours and two sizes – the small will fit a case of wine – and prices start at $275.

Campbell says the boxes are not only convenient for users, but also a money saver for delivery companies.

"By our estimates, about 38 million parcels per year in Australia get a 'sorry we missed you' card and you have to go get it from the post office. It costs the courier companies an average of $2 per parcel [to redirect to the post office], so you're looking at 70 to 80 million dollars per year that it costs the courier companies with these mis-deliveries," Campbell said.

"It's not just an energy saver, and a time saver for the consumers but a massive money saver for the couriers as well."

The team has been working with every courier company in the Canberra region to ensure deliveries go smoothly.

The Smart Delivery Systems are currently available in the Canberra and Queanbeyan region, with plans to roll them out across Australia later this year. They are available at sds.delivery
