Last Friday, Sacred Heart Central School students put their arguing powers to the test participating in a debating challenge in front of fellow students, parents and teachers.

It was the culmination of a seven-week program for students from year 3 to year 7.
Participants spent each Friday with debating specialist teacher Ros Burge improving their debating skills.
Here they learnt the finer art of constructing an argument for either an affirmative or negative team.
Each of the teams included a senior student who led the way providing guidance to the younger students.
As well as improving debating skills, the program promoted interaction between different age groups.
Sacred Heart’s Nicky Trinder said the program was well-received by participants who gained useful skills.
“It was an outstanding program,” Mrs Trinder said.
“The kids got a lot out of it,” she continued.
Students showed terrific skill putting together comprehensive arguments for their team, perfecting the art of rebuttle and summarising well in their third speaker position.
Mrs Trinder said given the success of the program it is likely the same or a similar program will be introduced to the school again.
“(Through this) we hope to reinvigorate the glory days of debating at Sacred Heart,” Mrs Trinder said.
