The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting 10 to 20mm on both Wednesday and Thursday and a further five to 10mm on Friday, with the same set to fall again on Sunday.
This follows weeks of consistent rain and has emergency services and Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council on high alert.
Cootamundra State Emergency Service (SES) Controller Des Rowe said if anywhere near the higher end of the forecast figure falls, Cootamundra could see a repeat of the flooding which took place last Wednesday.
“If we end up with what they are talking about we are in trouble; the water has nowhere to go,” Mr Rowe said.
Muttama Creek rose more than a metre in the space of a day and with the district already sodden the water quickly posed a problem.
It spilled onto roadways causing alarm for motorists and resulting in road closures.
In some low-lying areas houses were inundated by the rising water.
The volume of water in Cootamundra drew comparisons with the floods of 1974, the last time local residents recalled seeing so much water.
Mr Rowe said extra hands are being brought in from outside crews to assist.
These volunteers are likely to arrive on Wednesday when the worst of the weather is set to hit.
Additionally, filled sandbags will be delivered for easy distribution to residents in need.
These are likely to be dropped off in Stockinbingal, where residences were under threat last week.
Mr Rowe urged people to act quickly and not leave things until the last minute if their property is affected by rising floodwater.
He said last week the SES was unable to help some residents with flooding in their homes as they had simply left it too late to barricade the water flowing in with sandbags.
Meanwhile, all causeways in Cootamundra still have water in them and have been closed since last week.
Council Interim General Manager Ken Trethewey confirmed they will remain closed over the coming days in anticipation of further rain this week.
