The RSL’s Jacqui Vincent said safety concerns existed around the current Wall of Remembrance and the possibility of holding an Anzac Day service at that site due to its close proximity to the highway.
She said King George Park provides a more suitable location.
The current wall will be dismantled and some of the bricks from it used for garden edging around the new monument.
The name plaques will be kept for historical purposes and the dedication plaque on the Wall of Remembrance refurbished and re-used at the site of the new monument.
The plaque reads “In honour of the men & women who served Australia in time of conflict during World War 2. Erected by Stockinbingal Soldiers Memorial Trust. Hon. Pres. D. B. Corby Unveiled by John Sharp Fed. M.P. Lest We Forget”.
The Cootamundra RSL Sub Branch has been working with the Stockinbingal community towards a goal of hosting their own Anzac Day service.
The community was keen to once again have a fitting place to remember those who served in all conflicts.
They are looking forward to the official unveiling of the new memorial this Anzac Day.
The Wall of Remembrance pays tribute to all those who served in World Wars I and II from Stockinbingal, to the Temora Shire boundary, Dirnaseer, Bland and back towards Cootamundra with all names to feature on the same memorial.
Funding for the new memorial comes from the NSW Government’s inaugural War Memorials Grants Program.
A further $14,290 from the same grants program has been secured for the Muttama Hall and Recreation Ground with a project to involve repairs to the hall where the honour rolls are featured.
The Muttama community will also restore the honour rolls using the money.
Member for Cootamundra, Katrina Hodgkinson said she was delighted the Cootamundra RSL Sub-branch, on behalf of the Stockinbingal community and The Wired Lab Ltd, on behalf of the Muttama community had secured funding for the two commemorative projects.
“It is really great to see this funding going toward two very impressive projects at Stockinbingal and Muttama to help these smaller communities honour the bravery and sacrifice of their local heroes,” she said.
