After attending a community meeting in Gundagai where shadow minister for local government Peter Primrose outlined Labor’s de-amalgamation plan to a parochial crowd, former Cootamundra Shire councillor Rosalind Wight says she can not see the tide of public opinion turning.

“Their undivided attention was on their town,” Mrs Wight said during Monday night’s council open forum meeting.
Furthermore, she said speculation Nationals leader John Barilaro would call a plebiscite in amalgamated areas had fuelled anti-merger sentiment.
It currently looks unlikely this will happen in Cootamundra, however Mrs Wight said a ‘Pandora’s Box’ has been opened which now can’t be closed.
“I’ve endeavoured to make this work but Barilaro has put the kiss of death to this amalgamation,” she said.
Many Gundagai residents remain committed to seeing their former Gundagai Shire Council restored as a stand-alone council.
