Travelling out to ADFA for a commemorative Anzac Day fixture against the military students, the Blues fought hard but were ultimately undone by inaccuracies in front of goals, registering seven behinds to the Rams’ two in a 10-2-62 to 7-7-49 loss. 

In a see-sawing affair, the Blues led by 3 at quarter time while the Rams struck back in the second lead by 3 at the long break.

However, a breakout third quarter from the home side saw ADFA/RMC boot four goals in 10 minutes, handing them a 15-point advantage into the final term. 

The Blues rallied admirably, narrowly outscoring the Rams in the fourth quarter but were unable to reel in the margin after some wayward goalkicking at crucial moments.

While disappointed with the loss, club spokesperson Pat Kerin said there were a number of positive to take away from their opening game.

“The fact that this was the Blues first match of the season, while Rams were playing their fourth match is quite impressive,” Kerin said.

“Young Jack Caldwell was also very effective on the wing and in the forward pocket on debut.”

Returning full forward Brad Slater was impressive with four goals whilst Phil Bird (2) and Dylan McDermott made the scoresheet.

The Blues travel to Goulburn on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Blues women have shown dramatic improvement in their second ever match with Megan Mayoh and Jess Garness booting historic goals for their side in a 33-point Anzac Day loss to the Rams

After suffering a 142-point drubbing at the hands of defending premier Gungahlin last Saturday, the Blues were an entirely different side, regularly competing for the ball and pressuring their opposition in both attack and defence.

Club spokesperson Pat Kerin said the girls are thriving in their new club environment but will be tested physically as they line up for their third game in eight days when they take on Belconnen in Canberra on Saturday.
