The incident in question occurred around 3pm on May 23 when the delivery van crossed at a crossing marked by two give way signs in order to enter a private property about 10km outside Cootamundra.
According to police, the Sydney-bound XPT service carrying over 200 passengers hit the van on towards the rear of its left passenger side, driving the van off the tracks and causing considerable vehicular damage.
The train stopped immediately, upon which time emergency services were called and both drivers were treated at the scene.
Local area command Inspector Frank Brown said the incident had shaken both drivers and issued a timely reminder to exercise caution around trains.
“I understand that the ARTC will review the incident and the crossing at which the accident occurred,” he said.
“It was fortunate that no-one was injured and we would urge drivers to take care at crossings in order to minimise incidents such as these.
“It is so important for drivers to give way to trains.”
It is so important for drivers to look out for and give way to trains.
