A group admitted to the race for Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council election at the eleventh hour has landed first spot on the ballot paper after a re-draw on Tuesday.
The group, all from Gundagai and headed by former Gundagai mayor Abb McAlister, was initially left off the ballot paper due to a paperwork error, however was allowed to run after contacting a Local Government lawyer and the matter being referred to the Crown Solicitors Office.
The group consists of Mr McAlister, David Graham, David Gain, Penny Nicholson and Amy Turner.
Landing the Group B spot are Dennis Palmer, Ron Magnone, Rosalind Wight, Diane Williams, Michael Kingwill, Jennie Maslin and Peter Batey while a third group in the C position on the ballot paper includes former Cootamundra mayor Doug Phillips, Craig Stewart, Stephen Doidge, Janet McAtear and Ian Armstrong.
Individual candidates in ballot order after the re-draw are another former Cootamundra mayor James Slattery, Leigh Bowden, Konrad Streher, Mary Donnelly, James Childs, Charlie Sheahan, Gil Kelly, Isabel Scott, David Harris, Roderick Chalmers and John Stephens.
With this the first year of above and below the line voting at Local Government level, voters can either number one group’s box above the line or mark at least five boxes in order of preference below the line.
Voters may choose to mark more than one box above the line or more than five below the line.
As the September 9 election dates draws nearer, the Cootamundra Herald will profile all candidates.
Meanwhile, residents will have the opportunity to hear from each of the candidates when ‘Meet Your Candidates’ forums are held in Cootamundra and Gundagai on Monday, August 21 and Thursday, August 24 respectively; both from 6.30pm until 8.30pm.
After initially declining the invitation to attend and speak, the group headed by former Cootamundra deputy mayor Mr Palmer will be represented at the forum.
This means all groups and individuals are represented.
