People are already taking to social media to upload images of their forms, some even posting photos with their personal details and unique barcodes in clear view, but the ABS warns it could jeopardise the official result.
The barcode, which appears in the bottom right corner of the survey form, is used to link a specific form to an eligible voting Australian, but if that barcode was shared on social media, it could potentially be duplicated and used by someone else.
The survey form contains simple “yes” or “no” checkboxes to the question: “Should the law be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry”?
The $122 million postal survey was given the High Court’s green light last week and letters were sent three-days later on September 13.
The official deadline for collection is Tuesday, November 7 at 6pm, but residents are urged to have their response in the mail before October 27.
