It comes after a 12-year-old Cootamundra student was suspended for carrying a knife around the school-yard.
Cootamundra LAC crime manager Scott Wilkinson said the male student was apprehended by staff after disclosing his cargo to a teacher.
“The student took a small knife to school but no serious incident occured,” he said.
“The 12-year-old told a teacher he was carrying a knife and the teacher promptly marched him up to the principal’s office.”
“The student has since been suspended.”
Crime manager Wilkinson revealed police had also spoken at length with the student to impress upon him the seriousness of his actions.
“The cops went around and gave him a good talking to,” he said.
“There won’t be any charges due to his age and no further action will be taken.
“That being said, that behaviour can’t be tolerated and it is a serious issue.”
Previous instances have occurred in which students have brought knives to school in Cootamundra.
A local principal confirmed that a student had brought a pocket knife to school from their farm earlier this year.
The principal said the issue was dealt with immediately and parents of the student were notified.
“The school took immediate action and although there was no suggestion of any threats being made, there is a zero-tolerance policy in relation to knives on school grounds and appropriate disciplinary action was taken,” the principal said.
