John Paul Locker Jnr was last seen in the Batlow area on Wednesday travelling in a white 1993-model Toyota Corolla sedan, with NSW registration plates BLY58Y.
He is described as being of Caucasian appearance with a fair complexion, around 170cm tall with a medium build.
He has brown hair and brown eyes and when last seen, was unshaven.
It is believed he is travelling with a 33-year-old woman and a six-month-old boy.
It is understood an argument broke out at a home in Banksia Street, Batlow on Wednesday morning shortly after 7.30am.
Police said they were told the wanted man allegedly assaulted and threatened an older male relative with an axe.
The 74-year-old man was able to escape.
Locker then drove off in white Toyota Corolla with the woman and baby.
A warrant for Locker arrest was made at Tumut Local Court on Thursday and police released his picture and description in the hope the community will be able to identify his whereabouts and notify police.
Police believe the wanted man has left the Batlow area and may be travelling south with the intention of going interstate to Victoria.
Police said Locker is not holding the woman and baby boy against their will and there are no outstanding health issues for either woman or child.
“We are hoping to get the community’s help to find John Paul Locker Jnr as quickly as possible,” Tumut Police Sergeant Shane Brasen said.
“If anyone has any information as to the whereabouts of this man we ask that they contact the Tumut Police Station on (02) 6947 7199, or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
Police are also advising members of the public not to approach Locker if they see him.
