Salvation Army shop manager Kate O'Brien said this year more people had been asking for help.
She said the increase in people asking for help was due to the rising cost of living, including electricity prices, but also because of job losses earlier this year.
"Our door is always open to help people and since the abattoir closed more poeple have asked for help," she said.
"This time of year is the hardest part, families wnat to do a little more for Christmas and the household budget often doesn't allow for it."
Mrs O'Brien said each year around 60 children benefited but she was expecting more would need a little Christmas cheer this year.
"The more we get allows us to help more people," she said.
The Cootamundra Toy Run has been a fixture in the calendar since 2004.
Run organsier Pat Teale said all the toys doanted would go straight to Cootamundra's Salvation Army store.
"We've already received some toys, but we'd love to have a lot more," Mrs Teale said.
“It’s because there’s a big need to help help give children a better Christmas, the abattoirs have closed down and there are more people to help.
“All the toys will be donates to the Salvos who will donate them locally.”
After the run, Mrs Teale said a barbecue lunch donated by Woolworths will be served.
"The run is free to enter, but for lunch it's a donation to the Salvos," she said.
For people who can't get down to Albert Park, toys can be left at IGA, Toy World and Woolworths.
