The country championships have been transformed with the under 16s to play in the Andrew Johns Cup and under 18s in the Laurie Daley Cup.
The Riverina Bulls, made up of juniors from Group Nine and Group 20, with tackle the GSR Wests Tigers in Gundagai.
Cootamundra’s Zac Rumble and Wayne Parker have been selected for the Laurie Daley Cup team.
Laurie Daley Cup coach Jarrod Crane has set his sights on making the semis after missing out in last year’s different format.
He’s been pleased with their build up despite three losses, to Monaro, Western and Victoria, in the lead up.
“I’m really happy and the boys have trained really hard over the summer,” Crane said.
“I’m confident with the squad we’ve put together.”
Crane said there were a lot of pleasing things out of the losses including their defence and shape in attack.
He’s looking forward to seeing Cootamundra’s Zac Rumble and Kangaroos halfback Tyson McLachlan in the back line and has been impressed with Griffith Black and Whites second rower Ziggie Vincent.
The new competition will see 52 games played in 23 towns across the state over seven weeks.
Proud of his upbringing in Junee, Daley believes it is a great opportunity for the next generation of country players.
“To see NRL clubs forming strong partnerships with various regions in the country is fantastic and will hopefully inspire young players to chase their dream of playing in the NRL,” Daley said.
The under 16s also tackle Greater Southern Razorbacks in Gundagai on Saturday.
They play at noon and the under 18s at 1.15pm
