The championship has borne out of the former Father-Son Championship which started in 2015.

Organiser Chris Dawe said the event had been moved to autumn away from the busier September date.

Dawe said the competition would be a two-person medley ambrose over 36 holes.

"You can play with your brother, sister-in-law, cousin or fiance,” he said.

“It’s a great way to spend some time with your family.”

The only requirement was a for a direct family link and Dawe said organisers were expecting families would be entering several teams.

Club captain Garry Mason said “negotiations” on the teams his family would be entering had already happened.

“I’ll play with my grandson Caden and my wife Anne will play with our son-in-law Darren,” he said.

Mason said the two-day event would bring families together.

“Hopefully we’ll generate a good feel on the course, we’ve got some great sponsors and great prizes on offer.”

It’s not just family pride on the line at the tournament, there’s a prize pool of around $6000.

The major prize is either a week-long trip to Melbourne or the Gold Coast to play four games of golf from Signature Golf Tours plus tickets to a State of Origin match.

There’s also daily prizes during the tournament for balls nearest the pin, longest and straightest drive.

Dawe said opening the tournament to more than dads and sons made the event more inclusive and switching to an ambrose would hopefully attract a few more players.

“If one player has a shocking road, it’s not the end of the world. You can combine as a pair to win,” he said.

“We would like it to be a major competition like our week of Veterans golf.”

The Country Club has organised for live entertainment from the band BearFX and will have a seafood buffet.

Dawe said the Family Golf Championships are scheduled for the same weekend as the Picnic Races.

“Players can get their rounds in during the morning and still have time to head to the track and then they can get some great entertainment and a good feed (at the club),” he said.
