Cootamundra Ex-Servicemen’s and Citizens’ Memorial Club has donated the princely sum after they reported a profit for the financial year.
Club president Michael Willis handed the handsome cheque to Can Assist president Bev Withers on Monday.
Each month, around 40 people in Cootamundra’s Can Assist branch.
That help can be for travelling for cancer treatment, accommodation or even medications. Often Can Assist helps with the gap not covered by insurance of Medicare.
“It means we can continue to assist people diagnosed with cancer,” Can Assist president Bev Withers said.
Mrs Withers said the branch was among the top 10 Can Assist branches in NSW for fundraising and club’s donation is “just typical of the community”.
“It’s representative of the support from the community,” she said.
Mrs Withers said the donation would make the job of fundraising a little easier, allowing them to focus efforts on people who need help.
Ex-Servicemen’s Club president Michael Willis said the club had enjoyed excellent trading during the year.
“We thought it should be spread amongst the community,” Mr Willis said.
“We’re here for the community, we’re proud to support Can Assist, we hope it puts a smile on someone’s face and relieves the pressure somewhat.”
Mr Willis said he was proud to be able to hand over the funds which would be used to assist people.
“Can Assist helps many people and cancer touches so many in our community,” he said.
He said the club was not-for-profit organisation and regularly supported community groups and sporting clubs.
