Cootamundra is set to swell as hundreds of people arrive for the annual Unisex Touch Carnival this weekend.

Teams won’t be just playing for pride but will be aiming to win some of the $5000 prize pool.

Carnival co-ordinator Tisha McTavish said 41 teams had registered for this year’s carnival including one from the Northern Territory, plus Sydney, Albury, Griffith, Canberra and Wagga Wagga.

McTavish said the event was good for the town and with teams like the Boneheads returning for the 25th year, showed how positive the event was.

“It presents Cootamundra in a positive way and is financially beneficial to the town which is why I got involved,” she said.

“This year NSW Touch are doing the draw and that’s one of the biggest challenges, so it’s much easier to ensure the event runs smoothly,” she said.

However, the event is struggling for referees and will have to rely on teams this weekend.

“We usually get a squad of referees from Canberra but there’s other commitments and they can’t come this year,” McTavish said.

“Each team provides one referee for each game and then we supply one referee.

“This year it means teams may have to provide two referees.”

After Saturday’s game, McTavish said the carnival’s major sponsor, the Cootamundra Ex-Servicemens’ and Citizen’s Memorial Club, was hosting the official after-party at 8pm.

The club will have three DJs including Splittah, DJ Drewsy and Decibelled from 9pm.

Sunday’s games are set to start at 8am before wrapping up at around 2pm.
