During work to repair the electrical network, a gas main was pierced on Carool Road.
Cootamundra’s Fire and Rescue NSW brigade and RFS volunteers were on hand to provide fire protection while the main was crimped to prevent leaks.
Power has been restored to many properties in town, however there other locations which are still without electricity.
Following the storm earlier on Friday, Cootamundra Fire and Rescue NSW brigade captain Les Carr said crews from Young, Gundagai and Harden assisted.
“We haven’t stopped since 4.45pm,” Captain Carr said.
He said firefighters had assisted with trees down, powerlines down, a gas leak and assisted paramedics.
“It’s unusual to have two big storms in a week,” he said.
“We appreciate the assistance from other Fire and Rescue NSW and RFS brigades, plus Essential Energy and the gas company, a lot of those guys are from out of town as well.”
Captain Carr said anyone interested in joining the Cootamundra brigade should get in contact with him.
FRIDAY, 8.49PM
Essential Energy said 2200 of their customers in Wallendbeen, Stockinbingal and parts of Cootamundra were left without power this afternoon.
“Estimated times for when power will be restored to customers are currently unknown,” an Essential Energy spokeswoman said,
“Crews will be working as quickly as safety allows to progressively restore supply, however, this may take a number of hours due to the amount of damage to the network,” she said.
“Crews are responding to a number of power outages and isolated incidents predominantly caused by trees falling across powerlines, fallen powerlines and damage to network equipment.”
The spokeswoman said extra crews had been called to Cootamundra to assist with repairs and power would be re-routed around the network to restore electricity where possible.
“Essential Energy reminds the public to stay at least eight metres away from damaged or fallen powerlines and to immediately report fallen powerlines, network damage, fires or trees contacting powerlines to Essential Energy on 13 20 80 or call Triple-0 if the situation is life threatening,” the spokeswoman said.
FRIDAY, 7.30PM
A severe storm which hit Cootamundra on Friday at 4.30pm has left several residents to clean up damage caused by high winds.
It’s the second storm to hit the town this week, after up to 40 millimetres was reportedly dumped on Cootamundra on Tuesday.
Police and firefighters were called to the intersection of Mackay and Sutton Streets after a tree came down damaging a power line.
Young and Harden’s Fire and Rescue NSW brigades were called to assist, as was Cootamundra and Stockinbingal’s Rural Fire Service volunteers.
Another powerline in the north end of Sutton Street had been damaged by a falling branch, while a tree knocked powerlines down on Pinkerton Road.
It’s believed around 1588 customers have no power in Cootamundra, while some homes in Wallendbeen and Stockinbingal also without electricity.
A home in Berthong Street had its roof blown off by the fierce winds.
Lyn Ormond lives across the street and said she got a bit of scare when the house opposite her’s lost part of its roof.
“Part of the debris nearly ended up going in through the window,” Mrs Ormond said.
“It was a bit of a scare, I was in the house by myself and my husband was down in the shed. I had no idea what happened.”
Mrs Ormond said they got plenty of rain on Tuesday but no damage during that storm.
"It came through very quickly. Fortunately there was no other damage, and everyone’s healthy and no one got hurt.”
