By Friday afternoon, as the maximum edged closer to the 40-degree mark, Wagga Rural Referral Hospital’s emergency department had yet to see a single patient affected by the heat.
“As the hot weather has been well-publicised, people are taking precautions so we hope this will prevent a lot presentations to hospital this weekend,” emergency department nurse manager Kristy Watson said.
The heat will continue over the weekend, with a predicted top of 41 degrees on Saturday and 42 on Sunday for Wagga.
In Junee, the predicted maximums are only marginally cooler, with likely tops of 40 on Saturday and 41 on Sunday.
Cootamundra is heading for 40 degrees on both days.
“During a heat wave, it is very important to stay in regular contact with your elderly friends, neighbours and relatives, and to look out for other vulnerable members of your community,” Ms Watson said.
