However, it didn't stop around 1500 people taking to the sand for fun.
Among the 124 teams registered for the event were the Newcastle Beer Wenches, who have made the journey to Cootamundra five times.
Glen Rigby is one of the team members and a volleyball enthusaist.
Mr Rigby helps organise a beach volleyball contest on the beaches of Newcastle on Australia Day and was a line judge during the Sydney 2000 Olympics.
"This is the biggest beach volleyball tournament in Australia and we play touranments all over the place," Mr Rigby said.
The team has never won the competition but they have won best dressed in the past.
In previous years they've dressed as the Playboy Bunnies and as the Harlem Globetrotters.
"Usually the Melbourne team beats us in the final but they're not here this year," Mr Rigby said.
"We all play in the biggest indoor bech voleyball tournament (Good Neighbour in Canberra)."
Along with Mr Rigby, the team’s players include a number of state and national representatives but this weekend is all about fun for them.
They've already been around the golf course once and will be teeing off again later this weekend.
Team member Trinity James said the Coota Beach Vollleyball Festival was a fun social event.
"It's something that we can do with our friends," Mrs James said.
"There's nothing like this anywhere else in Australia."
They have nothing but praise for the organsiers and the event.
"It's great atmosphere, everoyone gets involved in it and the organisers are very helpful and they look after us," Mr Rigby said.
Mr Rigby offered a little advice for players who don't get to play volleyball every often.
"When you're passing the ball keep your elbows straight," he said.
"It's the simplest thing and we'll have more rallies and everyone will enjoy it more," he said.
FESTIVAL PUTS COOTA ON THE MAP
The 2018 Coota Beach Volleyball Festival marks the first year that Cootamundra's Nathan O'Neill has played.
"I should have got involved a lot earlier, it's a big turnout and it's enjoyable," Mr O'Neill said.
"There's a competitive aspect to it, but it's just a great, fun experience.
"You never want to lose a game, but even if you do, you're still having fun."
While he's lived in Cootamundra for the last eight years, he saw the first beach volleyball event outside the Olympic Hotel many years ago.
"It's really putting Coota on the map, there's plenty of people from a long way away," he said.
"It really does give you the spirit of summer, brings everyone together and show what a small country town can do."
Meanwhile, Clarissa Campbell and some of her friends from university returned for another year.
The group have have all finished their studies and now work as lawyers, dietitians, public servants and engineers in Sydney, Wollongong, Canberra and Cootamundra.
“It’s a great weekend, there’s a sense of community, we can be active for the weekend and put some money back into the community,” Ms Campbell said.
The only people missing from the group are Brydie and Chris who were getting married in a private ceremony and Ms Campbell and her friends wanted to wish them all the best.
