The Holden Scramble is one of the nation’s biggest pro-amateur team events.
After qualifying at their local event earlier in the year, the team led by PGA Professional Matthew Parsons, together with Lyal Twyford, Brendan O’Callaghan, Simon Lienesch and Peter Annetts held off a host of teams to grab the one spot available at the regional final, played at Yowani Country Club.
Annetts said the team were excited to reach the final.
“It was a good team effort, everyone contributed and we had a couple of good shots among the boys,” Annetts said.
He said one of the shots which made a big difference was when Twyford teed off from the second-last hole which was a par three.
“That shot made the difference for us winning and losing. He pulled off a beauty,” Annetts said.
Despite being one of the toughest holes on the course, Twyford hit the ball straight over the water meaning the team only used two strokes.
“A lot of people can birdie a par four or a par five, but it’s hard to birdie a par three,” Annetts said.
The team will now compete for the national title at Twin Waters Golf Club in May.
Parsons, said his team was thrilled to be heading to the championship final.
“The Holden Scramble is always one of the most highly anticipated events on our club calendar, and we are ecstatic that Cootamundra Golf Club is going to be represented at the championship final,” he said.
“We can’t wait to get to the Sunshine Coast. We have heard such great things from others who have been to the championship final and it will be great to experience the event for ourselves.”
PGA Australia’s national events manager Michael Chard said winning the final could “icing on the cake”.
“All teams have won just by getting to the final, having beaten roughly 8,750 teams at the local level and 500 teams at the regional final, to be one of just 30 teams participating in the championship final,” Chard said. “The Twin Waters Golf Club and Novotel Twin Waters Resort have become synonymous with this event and we know that all participants will have a memorable week.”
