In early June, Goulburn District Cricket Association vice president and life member Bob Smith made application to the Northern Riverina Cricket Council to join the Stribley Shield competition, and at the Northern Riverina Cricket Council AGM held on Sunday, June 24, delegates welcomed Goulburn in.
With the demise of the Country Plate competition and more recently the Burns Cup being played as a knock out competition, Goulburn were looking for other options for representative cricket, especially after last season when their representative season ended after being knocked out of the Burns Cup in the first round.
The Stribley Shield now spans over six decades. A Gundagai businessperson C.B. “Bol” Stribley donated the Stribley Shield around 1950. The inaugural winners in 1950-51 were Cootamundra.
The Stribley Shield was initially a Southern Tablelands Cricket Council competition, which encompassed the towns of Cootamundra, Cowra, Grenfell, Gundagai, Temora, Tumut, Young and West Wyalong.
When the STCC was disbanded, the Stribley Shield competition was taken over by the newly formed Northern Riverina Cricket Council.
Since the formation of the NRCC, the Stribley Shield competition has been the NRCC senior representative trophy.
In the 2016-17 season, when Western Cricket Zone abolished the Lachlan Cricket Council competition, Young were successful in re-joining in the Stribley Shield. They play as an invitational association.
In the last two seasons, the competition has comprised of six sides, Cootamundra, Gundagai/Tumut, Temora, Yass, Young and Wagga.
The competition rules are similar to the Country Plate competition – 50 overs a side.
At the NRCC AGM, delegates took a very dim view of the late forfeits which have plagued the competition of late, especially with notice of forfeiture as late as Saturday night before a scheduled match.
Commencing in the new cricket season, any team that forfeits after 12 noon on the Friday before the scheduled match will incur a $160 fine.
In addition, any association that forfeits two matches, will be removed from competition and will automatically forfeit their right to play in the final should they finish first or second.
