The Cootamundra Herald is calling for nominations from members of the community for young woman who best represent Cootamundra for ‘wattle time’.
The tradition of selecting Miss Wattle dates back to 1969, with the winner playing a role with the Wattle Time Fair organised by the Cootamundra Development Corporation and other events during August.
Last year’s winner was Maddison Baker, who has since go on to study at Charles Sturt University in Albury.
“I loved it. It was very exciting when they called my name out, I had no idea,” Miss Baker said.
Miss Baker said she had been nominated by a woman from the community who she had met briefly while at work.
“You can be nominated by anyone,” she said.
She encouraged people to think about the young women who were doing their best around, and for the community.
“Or someone who can be a role model for young girls in the community,” Miss Baker said.
During her time as Miss Wattle, her official duties included opening the Wattle Parade and making a speech at the debutante ball.
Her advice to this year’s Miss Wattle was simple.
“Enjoy it and make the most of it, it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity for you to represent our beautiful town,” Miss Baker said.
Nominations for Miss Wattle should include the nominee’s full name, their contact details or their workplace, the contact details for the person making the nomination.
Nominations should also include details about what they’re involved with in the community and why they would be a good candidate for Miss Wattle 2018.
Nominations will close at 5pm on Friday, August 10 and they can be dropped into the Cootamundra Herald office at 245b Parker Street, or emailed to cootanews@fairfaxmedia.com.au.
