The market consisted of 450 suckers, 1900 lambs and 1200 sheep and competition was not as buoyant as it has been.
The market trends fluctuated throughout the sale with the very good fresh new season lambs selling 800-840c/kg. The best old lambs sold at 700-760c/kg, but if the same weight lambs were lacking cover, they were receiving 600-650c/kg.
The season’s first suckers hit Cootamundra and top price went to the Turner family of Wallendbeen; their fresh suckers made $196.
With a weight of 22.5kg and $8 skin they came back at 835c/kg.
A single smaller pen of old lambs of long-term contributer to the yards, Merv Scott of Cootamundra made $221. With a skin of $10 and weighing 28kg they came back at 750c/kg
Competition was erratic for the trade weight old lambs and they made $135-$166 to avg 740c/kg and light trade old lambs that lacked finish sold mostly from $105-$125.
A run of trade weight Merino lambs sold from $135-$175 to make 600-700c/kg, once again the level of competition depended on fat and muscle cover.
The mutton market has seen a correction with heavy ewes being $20 cheaper and medium weight sheep being firm to $5 easier. The weight was not the same as previous sales and most ewes made $115-$150.
The next sheep sale at the Cootamundra Saleyards will be on Wednesday August 8, commencing at 8.30am.
