Members of the older person’s education group became interested in learning about the Sikh religion after seeing young men in turbans working in their community.
After making several enquiries about a suitable speaker, U3A was delighted when Mr Harkirat Singh, the secretary of the Supreme Sikh Council of Australia, offered to make the journey from Melbourne to speak to the group.
In his talk, Mr Singh will include the history and basic tenets of Sikhism and explain how it is a modern and practical religion.
He will shed light on how Sikhism raises awareness against the traditional Indian caste system, gender inequality and how it strives to give all people basic human rights.
On his short visit to Cootamundra Mr Singh will be accompanies by his wife and two young children.
