Cootamundra retired teacher Martin McCarthy has urged residents to donate used but working laptops to give English students in Laos a better education.

Mr McCarthy spent five weeks in June volunteering at the English Club Laos community school in Luang Prabang.
He donated a Wi-Fi network to the school and is seeking support to create a computer lab.
Mr McCarthy said there were about 350 students at the school including, monks, novices, children and young adults.
“My youngest student was aged nine and the oldest was 55,” he said.
“They are very keen and some of them work 10 hours a day but still go to the school afterwards.”
Mr McCarthy said as the Southeast Asian country opened up its tourism and economy, getting an education and computer skills were vital for helping lift people out of poverty.
“If there are any firms or people in the community who have upgraded their laptops, they could donate them to the English Club,
“While they might not be state-of-the-art, they would be great for a school with no computing facilities.”
