In fact, public libraries right across the state are struggling to meet the growing community demands.
At just 7.8 per cent of total funding, the NSW government’s contribution to libraries is the lowest of any state in Australia, trailing far behind Victoria (18 per cent) and Queensland (12 per cent). This is a disgrace.
NSW public libraries receive over 35 million visits a year, however state recurrent funding has not increased to match this increased demand. Unfortunately funding has been cut by 5 per cent in the 2018-19 budget.
Our public libraries are at a crisis point, it’s time to act. Local Government NSW (LGNSW) and NSW Public Libraries Association (NSW PLA) have united to form Renew Our Libraries, an advocacy initiative with the objectives of doubling the state government funding contribution to NSW public libraries, and creating a new funding model that is sustainable for the long term.
