Approximately 10 black Angus cattle strayed through an open gate near the Sydney-Melbourne railway line north of Cootamundra last Wednesday night.
A number of the cattle were hit and killed or seriously injured by a freight train at 11.30pm, at a point between Cootamundra and Wallendbeen near where the Olympic Highway runs alongside the railway.

A car on the highway and an ambulance travelling from Young to Cootamundra also collided with the animals.
The train, car and ambulance involved in the collisions were damaged, but no people were injured.
Police and Australian Rail Track Corporation staff returned some animals to the paddock after the collisions.
After assessment by the property owner the following day the remaining injured beasts were destroyed.
Police have reminded drivers to expect the unexpected at night - while roads should be clear of all animals, occasionally they are not.
They also urged all drivers entering properties to leave gates as they find them.
