Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council will trial the lights on one tree in the main street, at a cost of $1,050 to be funded from the street tree maintenance budget.
A 120-metre length of lighting, with 1200 LED lights, which are inexpensive to run and very low maintenance, will be installed.
The proposal said the lighting was "a means to create visual stimulation and amenity in the CBD".
