Boyd was honoured in front of Wolves fans at halftime in their round 28 Super League clash against Wakefield Trinity on Friday, September 6 at Warrington's Halliwell Jones Stadium.
The former Australian and NSW State of Origin representative said it was a massive surprise.
He and his wife Judy had been invited to attend the Warrington Wolves Sportsman's Night event on September 5.
Club officials called him up to accept the prize at a packed Halliwell Jones Stadium.
"It was a bit of a surprise," he said.
"We were just expecting to attend the Sportsman's Night. At halftime in a game, I didn't know, they picked me out and presented it to me in front of the crowd."
Boyd played five years in England with Warrington Wolves, after more than 100 games for Western Suburbs and Manly in the NSWRL competition during the 1970s and 1980s.
He won a premiership and received the Harry Sunderland Trophy for man-of-the-match in Warrington's grand final victory over Halifax in 1986.
His playing days finished in 1990.
The tough front-rower says it was a memorable time in his career.
"I had five very good years over there," Boyd said.
"I enjoyed my time there, the club made me and my family feel very welcome."
While he said he doesn't have a lot to do with the sport these days, he's regularly on the sideline at Les Boyd Oval supporting the Cootamundra Bulldogs.
"I still go watch them, they have good support and I hope they go well" he said.
"As long they continue to put sides on the field I think they're doing a good job."
