The nation's peak motoring body is urging the federal government to overhaul its safety strategy after the latest figures showed little progress in reducing road deaths.

Data released by the Australian Automobile Association on Thursday showed 1185 people died on the nation's roads in the year to September 30.
It's a reduction of just 0.2 per cent from the national road toll for the same period four years ago, showing Australia will fail to meet its targets to reduce deaths.
"Instead of declining, the road toll has plateaued at a level that makes it clear we cannot meet the strategy's targets," AAA managing director Michael Bradley said on Thursday.
The target is to reduce road fatalities and serious injuries by 30 per cent by the end of next year.
"Our five largest states - and Australia as a whole - are on track to miss the 2020 target," Mr Bradley said.
All states except Tasmania recorded fatalities above their promised targets.
The Office of Road Safety was set up in July this year to drive national leadership on the issue.
The association wants the federal government to:
* Establish a national road safety data hub within the Office of Road Safety
* Tie infrastructure funding to road safety outcomes
* Encourage Australians to buy safer vehicles and introduce targets aiming for people to drive newer cars
* Ensure the Office of Road Safety has proper powers to oversee the next national strategy, due to begin in 2021
