Funds were to have come from savings from a new energy contract, but that has been delayed and council will now put the lights into next year's budget.
Although no controlled survey of public opinion was made, the council received a large number of favourable verbal comments and there were a lot of positive comments on Facebook.
Councillors thanked the manager of waste, parks and recreation, Wayne Bennett and his outdoor staff for the outstanding improvement in the appearance of the main street.
