Australian Education Union members have voted narrowly to accept the 2.35 per cent pay increase along with increased financial assistance for students with complex needs.

The deal also includes enhanced country incentives, reduced face-to-face teaching time for principals and new positions for highly accomplished and lead teachers.

It will now be put to a statewide ballot of all of the state's 28,000 teachers, principals and support staff early next year.

Treasurer Rob Lucas has welcomed the vote, which he hopes will finally bring the issue to a close.

"We hope this ballot result will bring us a step closer to resolving our long-running enterprise bargaining negotiations for the benefit of all teachers, principals and support staff as well as students," the treasurer said.

"We look forward to putting this offer to a ballot of all of the state's teaching workforce next term and the prospect of a formal agreement soon after. We urge them all to support the offer."

Australian Education Union president-elect Lara Golding said the ballot result was still a wake-up call for the state government.

"Our members have stood strong for more than 18 months and have committed to taking industrial action to bring the government back to the negotiation table," she said.

Ms Golding said teachers would continue to fight to seek further improvements to public education in SA.

"We are putting the government on notice, particularly around issues that have not been adequately addressed," she said.

"We all need to remember that this is just one cycle of the enterprise bargaining process."
