At their meeting at the end of February councillors were enthusiastic about the plan, and approved its use by the Cootamundra RSL sub-branch to apply for a federal grant of $150,000.
Addressing the council's public forum, sub-branch secretary Jacqui Vincent said the concept drawings showed a much more community-friendly area.
She said the current 'teardrop' shaped roadway, entering and exiting from the corner of Thompson and Bourke, had some danger, creating a five-way traffic flow at the intersection.
She later explained that vehicle access would be changed so that cars could enter from further up Thompson, with a parking area provided, and then exit into Bourke.
The concept plan shows the corner would be attractively landscaped and converted into a pedestrian-only pathway.
Ms Vincent she had been working closely with council to finalise the RSL's joint submission for funding, and had received several letters of support locally.
Councillor Gil Kelly said the plan would deliver a great memorial and moved its adoption.
