This is the biggest swim meet on the summer calendar for the region.
The Southern Inland Swimming Association is one of the biggest regions in New South Wales, covering a geographical area of the majority of southern NSW. Cootamundra welcomed 300 swimmers from 23 Swimming Clubs from the region.
The 23 Swimming Clubs consisted of swimmers from Albury, Batlow, Boorowa, Coleambally, Coolamon, Cootamundra, Deniliquin, Ganmain, Griffith, Gundagai, Harden, Hay, Junee, Leeton, Narrandera, Quandialla, Temora, Tumut, Ungarie, Wagga Wagga, West Wyalong, Yass and Young Swimming Clubs.
On Saturday 6th February, saw the swimming meet commence at 2pm with the long distance races and on Sunday 7th February, 2021 saw 290 swimmers participate in the 2021 Speedo Sprint Series Heats consisting of 50m events for each respective stroke from under 8s through to under 13s, along with freestyle and medley relay races.
The Speedo Sprints was officially opened by special guest, mayor of Cootamundra Gundagai Regional Council Mr Abb McAllister.
The Speedo Sprints is a initiative by NSW Swimming.
The Swimmers will swim in the Speedo Sprints Series Heats within their region and the top four swimmers for each age group for each stroke are selected to represent the Southern Inland Swimming Association Region (SISA) at the Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre Homebush on Saturday 6th March, 2021 where all regions from across New South Wales will swim against one another in the 2021 Speedo Sprint Finals.
The Speedo Sprint Series is another opportunity and pathway to give swimmers an opportunity to represent their swimming regions.
The meet saw several swimmers achieve personal best times, along with breaking several Southern Inland Swimming Association records which is a great achievement.
Overall Southern Inland Swimming Association saw over 30 records broken either in individual events or relay events.
This meet was the last opportunity for swimmers to achieve a NSW Country Qualification Time before the NSW Country Championships which are held in Sydney on the 19th to 21st February, 2021 at the Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre Homebush, (SOPAC).
Major achievements over the weekend:
- Yass Swimming Club won the Bernie Boyd March Past Shield for the best dressed and presented swimming club.
- Wagga Wagga Swim Club won the Hayes Shield for the Boys 12 years and under 200m Medley Relay.
- Yass Swim Club won the Foley Shield for the Girls 12 years and under 200m Medley Relay.
- Wagga Wagga Swim Club won the Corcoran Shield for Girls 13 years and over 200m Medley Relay
- Tumut Swim Club won the Murphy Shield for the Boys 13 years and Over 200m Medley Relay.
- Yass Swim Club won the Mawbey Shield for Girls 12 years and under 200m Freestyle Relay
- Wagga Wagga Swim Club won the Poynter Shield for the Boys 12 years and under 200m Freestyle Relay
- Tumut Swim Club won the Penny Shield for the Boys 13 years and over 200m Freestyle Relay
- Wagga Wagga Swim Club won the Donnelly Shield for the girls 13 years and over 200m Freestyle Relay
Overall winners of the Southern Inland Swimming Association Long Course Championship Meet were Wagga Wagga Swim Club in First Place, Griffith Swim Club in second place and Cootamundra Swimming Lifesaving Club in third place.
"This was the first time Cootamundra Swimming Club had held the SISA Championship and Speedo Sprints over two days. The sun came out at the right time and it was great weather to hold the meet. Overall, this was a sensational turn out for the SISA Championships and Cootamundra Swimming Club was very proud to host such an event which ran very smoothly over the two days. The number of swimmers that turned out for the entire weekend, shows that participation levels in swimming is very strong," Mark Lake president of Cootamundra Swimming Lifesaving Club said
