The rail bridge will be demolished and replaced for the safety of road and rail users, with demolition work to begin this morning (Tuesday 30 March). Teams will be working 24 hours per day over this period, and is expected to be complete by midnight, Wednesday 31 March. Further work to replace the bridge will take place after this is complete.
At this stage, it is anticipated the road may be closed for some time with more detailed information to be shared with the community as soon as possible.
Transport for NSW is working with John Holland and Cootamundra - Gundagai Council on minimising local traffic impacts until the bridge replacement is complete.
While the road is closed, motorists are asked to detour via the Olympic Highway and Goldfields Way, which may add an additional 40 minutes travel time to journeys.
Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions, plan ahead, and follow the directions of signs and traffic control.
As the Olympic Highway through Wallendbeen is a PBS route, PBS vehicles should use alternative approved routes suitable for their combination.
Freight operators seeking further information about permits or alternative routes should contact Heavy Vehicle Access Coordinator Craig Gibbins on 0428 410 626.
Road freight operators can also refer to Transport for NSW's Restricted Access Vehicle online mapping site at nswroads.work/ravmap.
XPT services between Sydney and Melbourne will also be impacted. For day time services, customers will travel by coach between Cootamundra and Yass. Night time services will be replaced by coaches for the entire journey
Transport for NSW thanks customers for their patience during this time.
