THE Annual Riverina District Rifle Association Prize Meeting was again held at the Cootamundra Rifle Range on Sunday.

All the Riverina clubs were represented and shooters travelled from Canberra, Bathurst, Orange, Cooma, Lyndhurst, Sydney and Wangaratta. A bus load of shooters from the Bungendore Club swelled the numbers by about 15 for a total of 46 shooters.
A warm sunny day with just a hint of a breeze made for a great day’s shooting.
In A Grade, Bill Ballantyne from the Hornsby Club led the field at the first 500 yards with a superb 50.8, followed by Les Frazer of Lyndhurst with 50.6.
Explorers’ Club (Lockhart Range) shooter Ken Cook was best at the second 500 yards with a great 50.7.
Four shooters scored 50.6 and they were Allan Benton from Wangaratta, David McIntosh of Canberra, Les Frazer and Bill Ballantyne.
A 15 shot match was held at 600 yards and veteran shooter from Ungarie, Spencer Dunstall, proved he can still match it with the best with an outstanding 75.12.
Graeme Crowe with 75.6 was the best of the rest of the field.
The Explorers Club made it a one, two finish with Ken Cook just edging out Graham Crowe with175.16 to 175.15.
Spencer Dunstall grabbed third spot with that great finish with a scoring of 174.22.
Ken gets to keep the magnificent Silver Jubilee Trophy for the next year. This trophy was donated by the Cootamundra and Jindalee Shires when they amalgamated in 1975.
In B Grade, Damien Doyle of Cooma won two ranges and the aggregate in a dominant display. Damien scored 48.4 at both the 500 yard ranges and 73.7 at 600 yards.
Geoff Roberts of Canberra won the second 500 yards with 49.6 just counting out Cootamundra shooter Graeme Green also on 49.6.
Damien Doyle’s winning score was 169.15.
Second in B grade was Shaun Wingrove from Canberra with 166.12.
John Owens from the Explorers Club won all three ranges in C Grade scoring 48.2, 48.4 and 68.1 to total 164.7.
Lex Lane from Bungendore was the only competitor in F Open Class and had scores of 53.3, 60.5 and 85.4 for a total of 201.12.
Warwick Sides was the best performed of the local shooters, shooting in F class.
Warwick was competing in A Grade among a very strong field.
Warwick won the first 500 yards with the only score of 60 at this range.
Cedric May of Canberra was second with a great 59.6.
Anthony Pederson of Canberra shot a brilliant 60.7 at the second 500 yard range edging out Keith Hills of Lyndhurst with 60.3.
At 600 yards, Tumut veteran Greg Warrian led the field with 89.6 from Anthony Pederson with 88.7.
The aggregate winner had to be decided by a shoot off. Warwick Sides and Anthony Pederson both scored 206.18 out of a possible 210. Anthony narrowly won the shoot off scoring 30 to Warwick’s 29.1.
In F Class, B Grade Cootamundra shooter Tim Fanning won the first 500 yard range with 57.4 from Mal Sharp of Orange with 57.2.
Daniel Sly of Canberra won the next range with 59.5 from Tony Daniel of Bungendore on 58.5.
At 600 yards Daniel Sly was again the winner with 88.7 from Mal Sharp with 88.6. Daniel Sly took out the aggregate with 203.14 from Mal Sharp with 199.10.
The presentation of trophies to the winners rounded off a very enjoyable day.
