A great batting performance by Matt Berkrey backed up by a superb bowling effort by David Garness has ensured Cootamundra having an easy win over Tumut in round two of the Stribley Shield at Albert Park on Sunday.

Berkrey scored 82 runs as the home aside amassed 241 runs while Garness captured 5/32 including a hat trick as Tumut were rolled for just 80.
Berkrey’s innings included six sixes, five fours in a power packed displayed, and his innings was easily his best for Cootamundra in senior representative cricket.
The 30th over of Cootamundra’s innings was memorable with the talented 17-year-old left-hander blasting 28 runs off the Tumut leg spinner Connor Barbe’s fifth over.
Berkrey dominated the eighth wicket stand with Aaron Kemp with the pair adding 70 runs with Kemp scoring just five runs.
When Berkrey looked set to score a 100, he was caught and bowled by the Tumut leg spinner Matt Sturt.
Earlier, Cootamundra got away to bright start with openers Michael Cronin and John Stephens adding 42 runs.
Stephens made 19 Cronin was in fine form scoring 38.
Once again, the Cootamundra captain Nathan Corby played his usual aggressive innings, scoring five fours and a six on his way to 35.
The Cootamundra innings only lasted 39 overs but the damage was certainly done with the home side amassing 241 runs.
Tumut leg spinner Matt Sturt bowled impressively and finished with 5/40 from his overs.
Tumut’s innings only lasted 21.1 overs. Their captain Glen Appleby top scored with scored 40 and Matt Sturt scored 23 with the pair adding 53 runs for the 2nd wicket.
Tumut’s batting line up folded up quickly, as they lost their last six wickets for five runs.
While David Garness was wayward early, he struck a great line and length in his eighth and ninth over.
In the space of six balls, he captured four wickets in including a hat trick to finish with 5/32 from 10 overs.
Garness has now captured 13 wickets in three matches.
Aaron Kemp bowling first change, was the surprise packet, snaring 4/15 from 5.1 overs.
In what was a memorable match, we have seen 2 five wicket hauls, a hat trick, and 30 runs come from over.
Considering the Cootamundra, selectors were forced to make five changes from the team that defeated Monaro on the previous Sunday, it does show Cootamundra has some depth in their representative playing squad.
In the three representative matches this season, Cootamundra has batted first and have scored 746 runs from 129 overs at 5.78 runs per over.
In the three matches, the side has have hit 22 sixes and the Twenty/20 competition does not start until Saturday!
The Stribley Shield competition continues next Sunday with Cootamundra playing Yass at Tim Doolan Oval in Harden. The match is at Harden as Yass’s home ground Victoria Park pitch has been returfed is not available.
