Bravehearts is an Australian charity that aims to stop child sexual assault, and White Balloon Day is Bravehearts’ key fundraising and awareness initiative.
Founder and CEO, Hetty Johnston, is urging all Australians to register an event for White Balloon Day and take a selfie to pledge support.
“Child protection is everyone’s responsibility,” Ms Johnston said.
Child sexual assault a prevalent issue in Australia; according to the Australian Institute of Criminology (1993) one in three girls and one in six boys will be sexually abused in some way before the age of 18 years.
Ms Johnston says the good news is that child sexual assault is preventable.
“By helping Bravehearts we can assist in putting a stop to it,” she said.
Suggested fundraising events for White Balloon Day include a ‘white morning tea’, a ‘wear white walk’ or a ‘wear white day’ at school or work .
Those who are savvy with social media can support the cause by taking a #whoRUprotecting selfie and publishing the photo and their answer on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.
The public can donate to the cause at www.whiteballoonday.com.au or buy a range of products including ‘Protect Kids’ campaign shirts; priced at $20.
