Heritage Centre secretary Betti Punnett says the lifesize wire horse and HMAS Cootamundra wheel are two of the most popular displays for school children.

The curiosity cabinet is another eye-catching exhibit, offering a hands-on experience for those who like to look closely at pieces of our history.

Inspired by a display in the Canberra National Museum, the cabinet was designed and presented by Graham Absolon in 2007.

Many of the curiosities on display are private collections, such as marbles, badges, lighters, and Don Bradman memorabilia.

Towards the rear of the centre sits the Stockinbingal telephone exchange, which was in use until 1981, and copies of the Herald articles that accompanied its retirement.

New items are also regularly added thanks to generous donations from the public and the many hours put in by volunteers.

The Heritage Centre is found on Hovell St and currently open 9.30am to 4.30pm, but hours extend half an hour each way after daylight saving begins this weekend, Sunday October 5.

Entry is a gold coin donation but children are invited to attend for free these holidays.
