Drivers on the Aussie Muscle Car Run started in Adelaide, have travelled to Hay, Bathurst and Cootamundra, and will cover 3,500km over a nine day period.
Local businesses including Bridgestone Tyres and Cootamundra Holden played their part in supporting the rally financially, and therefore a couple of pit stops were in order.
Driver Peter Williams and his brother Dave from Port Lincoln are passionate about cars and the cause.
“Years ago my uncle died from Leukaemia, and I’ve also had a friend diagnosed more recently; he pulled through it,” Peter said.
“It’s a good excuse to go for a burn.”
Peter spent the past two years preparing his car for the long trip, determined as ever to complete work by the starting date. With a bit of luck number 13 was road ready just in the nick of time, a great relief for Peter and Dave.
Graham Stewart drives the L34 Holden in honour of ‘Brad and Bev’ fellow Australians who recently lost their lives to Leukaemia.
It has been an emotional week for Graham, who says it’s a chance to use the car for a good cause.
Car run entrant Jeff Pohl said he was "over the moon" with the hospitality he experience in Cootamundra, and is shaving his beard on Saturday to raise more money for the cause.
"We've raised over $450,000 so far and we're hoping to crack $500,000 by the end of the week," he said.
Interested locals heard the vintage Holdens arriving at Bridgestone on Monday afternoon and gathered nearby.
“I’ll take it for a spin,” one of the locals said; keen to get behind the wheel.
However it was only a brief stop, drivers were on a tight schedule leaving for Winton. Not before they burned down the main street, smiles as wide as the tyres on their cars. Drivers will conclude their trip in Mount Gambier on Saturday.
