Oh I like this story - in the Sunday Melbourne Age newspaper, March 15, on the Opinion page, Senior Journalist Matt Cunningham was “on a roll” reference local government councillors “in there to feather their own nests” and also going on overseas junkets at ratepayers expense.
Matt goes on to say “the country town of Cootamundra is abuzz with the news that its town clock will chime again!”
Not exactly the kind of headline-grabbing news event that would make the papers in the big smoke, but dig a little deeper and you’ll find a story as rare as it is remarkable.
Because councillor Mary Donnelly has donated some of her stipend received from the Cootamundra Council ($2000) towards the restoration of their Town Clock! Yes, that’s right, the good councillor has put her hand into her own pocket to ensure the clock keeps on ticking!
Local councillors are supposed to be the voice of their constituents on issues like rubbish collection, cracked footpaths - and dysfunctional clocks.
If councils wish to save money Cr Mary Donnelly would be happy to take your call!!”
Accolades to Cr Donnelly.
