The talented photographer and small business owner said she was “very shocked” with the honour.
She is now a finalist for the NSW Business Chamber state awards, to be judged in Sydney on November 27.
The award recognises an inspirational person aged between 18-35 years who, through their own commitment and passion, has built and operates a successful business.
Judges look for entrepreneurial spirit, strategic direction and innovative ideas, and someone who provides inspiration to a new generation of upcoming young business people.
“The award is great but I have never done this for the recognition,” Carmen said.
“I love seeing the reaction on my clients faces when they see the photographs, and the joy I feel.
“It goes to show you can have it all as a mother and a business woman.”
Carmen was hospitalised with postnatal depression after the birth of both of her daughters while beginning her career.
She says the difficult period, which included the breakdown of her marriage, made her who she is today.
“You can go through depression and be successful, you can be a single mother and have it all,” she said.
Carmen thanked her parents for always supporting her and helping her pursue her dream.
She often calls upon their support when dealing with a demanding schedule including frequent weekend work.
Carmen also thanked her partner Chris Brennan for encouraging her to open her gallery on Wallendoon St.
Having a place to do her work helps her relax and spend time with her family when she is home.
“When I close those doors I am done for the night,” she said.
Despite her demanding schedule, which includes 40 to 50 hours of post-production after any wedding shoot, Carmen still makes time for volunteer work.
So far this year she has photographed about 150 veterans as part of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography WWII Reflections project.
Carmen also volunteers her time and expertise to Heartfelt, an organisation working with families who have lost a child.
