In the wake of the coordinated terrorist attacks on the French capital, police delivered the grim news that the death toll had climbed to 129 people, including at least 89 killed at the Bataclan concert hall alone.

But that number takes on its true, devastating significance once we see the faces of those who lost their lives while simply enjoying their Friday night.

​A Twitter account has been set up by Mashable, giving a brief and touching description of the victims, alongside their photographs.

The account, entitled En mémoire (In memory), makes for heartbreaking reading.

Lola Salines, a 28-year-old French woman, loved roller derby and children's books.

"Sensitive, hip, enthusiastic," is how she is described.

Mathias Dymarski, from France, rode BMX bikes and died with his girlfriend, 23-year-old Marie Lausch, who worked at a PR firm.

​Another victim, Mathie Hoche, "loved rock & roll and had a six-year-old son".

Addressing a special congress at the Palace of Versailles overnight, French President Francois Hollande also drove home the personal toll of the attacks.

"The terrorists were targeting a France that is open to the world," he said.

"Most of the dead were not even 30. They were called Mattias, Quentin, Nick, Noemie, Djamila, Helene, Elodie, Valentin...What was their only crime? To be alive.

"France loves life, culture, sport, partying. The France that the terrorists wanted to kill was its youth in all its diversity."
