Third quarter blitz sees Blues past Cats

With the match up for grabs in the third quarter, the Blues slammed home five goals in seven minutes before the final change to pave way for a comfortable victory by 27 pts. 13-12-90 to 9-9-63.

While the first two quarters were very even, the Blues led by just a pt. at quarter time and 8 pts at the long break.

17 minutes into the third quarter, the Blues only led by 2 pts, then the floodgates opened, the next seven minutes saw the Blues play some very scintillating football, booting five unanswered goals.

At the last change, the Blues led by 33 pts and although narrowly losing the last quarter, the Blues sung their victory song with plenty of gusto in the sheds.

The catalyst in the third quarter rampage was the Blues captain Phil Bird who dominated the game late the quarter booting three goals.

While Bird played well all over the ground, six time best and fairest winner Stephen Chant turned back the clock with a vintage performance and was easily adjudged best on ground picking up over 30 disposals.

Coach Scott Munday again played strongly down back and continually drove the Blues into attack.

On baller, Jake Turner played his best game of the season and was rewarded with two goals.

Up forward when most of us thought Brad Slater was out for weeks, the big fella returned and showed his class booting five goals. In three matches, Slater has booted 4, 6 and 5.

The win by the Blues sees them 2-2 plus a bye, they are firmly entrenched in the six.  

“The Cats brought a very good side to Clarke Oval today however the Blues are a very good side and your dominant third quarter was the turning point in the match,” club official Adam Asanovski said. 

Before the match commenced, everybody observed a minute’s silence honouring the recent passing of two life members inMargaret Howard and Jack Weller.

Showing their respect, the Blues players wore black armbands.

On Saturday, the Blues host Molonglo who are yet to win a match.
