To get people thinking about how they’ll get home safely after catching up with friends or after Christmas parties – they’re giving away four swags.
To enter, people can visit one of the participating venues including the Cootamundra Ex-Servicemen’s and Citizens’ Memorial Club, enter their details and what their Plan B will be for the night.
The Plan B doesn’t have to be a swag rolled out on a mate’s lawn, it could be a taxi, courtesy bus, a designated driver or even staying the night in a hotel.
However, it’s not all fun and games, council’s road safety officer Anthony Webb said alcohol was a significant factor in crashes in the region.
“We don’t want people to take a risk,” Mr Webb said.
“According to Roads and Maritime Services crash data for the 2011 to 2016 period eight per cent of injury crashes were alcohol-related in the Cootamundra region.”
Mr Webb said four swags valued up to $250 were up for grabs and aside from the Ex-Servicemen’s Club, people could enter at the Cootamundra Country Club, Central Hotel and the Albion Hotel.
“The swag prizes reinforce the Plan B message that there’s always an alternative to drink driving - catch a cab, roll a swag out in the back of the ute or on a mate’s floor,” Mr Webb said.
Cootamundra Ex-Servicemen’s Club secretary manager Greg Bruce said the club was more than happy to get on board with the campaign.
“People getting home safely from the venue is part of our commitment to the community,” Mr Bruce said.
“We want people to come here, enjoy themselves and get home safely."
Supporting the Plan B isn’t their only way to help get people home safely.
“We have a courtesy bus for our members, it can get people to the club and home again, it’s a great Plan B,” Mr Bruce said.
He said often patrons would book the bus ahead of the time because they wanted to enjoy themselves but also get home.
Extra police resources are expected to be deployed by the NSW Police Force for the festive season as more people hit the highways to visit family and friends.
“The Plan B Swag campaign aims to encourage patrons who are planning a night out to be sensible and plan ahead, so if you are going to be drinking, make alternate plans for getting home and don’t drive,” Mr Webb said.
Council’s Plan B competition runs until January 6.
