Toowoomba storm and hail forces local businesses to shut down

Toowoomba residents reported up to 100mm of rain while the Bureau of Meteorology reported 43mm of rain when a storm hit at 2am on Sunday.

Many local residents and business operators spent Sunday cleaning up the remaining ice, fallen trees, caved-in ceilings and flooded buildings.

Darren Fielder was "shocked" to find half a metre of hail in the garage of his Redleaf Environmental office in Toowoomba.

Mr Fielder posted a video of family and friends cleaning up the extensive hail, which had clumped together to appear like snow.

"Today [Sunday] we're cleaning up. We've got a heap of hail in our garage at our office in Toowoomba. You wouldn't believe it, would you? The amount of water and rain and hail that came down is just unreal," he said in the clip.

Black Canvas Graphic Design also reported hail inside of their closed garage, which spilled out into the adjoining hallway.

Restaurant Proof BBQ and Booze announced they will be closed until further notice due to severe flooding, caved-in ceilings and exposed electrical.

Meanwhile, toy store Little Children's Boutique said it was "heartbreaking" to see the damage that was caused by the storm, which also forced their shop to close down.

Elders Insurance Toowoomba shared photos of their damaged office after their ceiling caved in under the pressure of the rain, which spilled into the workspace.

Groom MP Garth Hamilton encouraged locals to "stay safe and look after each other".

"Like most people around here in Toowoomba, I spent the morning cleaning up after last night's incredible storm that's absolutely bashed the trees around here. We've still got piles of ice lying on the ground," Mr Hamilton said on Sunday.

"If you've got issues with drain water, get in touch with your council. If you've got issues or damage to your house or property, get in touch with the SES."
