Australia’s story began 60,000 years ago but new chapters are being written every day. On Australia Day, we come together to reflect on our history and to celebrate our achievements and our people.

New South Wales

In the Central West, the Fun Fair at the Bathurst Showgrounds has rides, free entry to the Manning Aquatic Centre and fireworks over the town at 8:30pm.

January 26 is the one day a year that you’re allowed to swim across Newcastle Harbour and plenty of people take up the challenge. Afterwards, enjoy all-day celebrations on the foreshore.

If you’re in Tamworth, head down to The Royal for a celebratory day featuring performances, a traditional smoking ceremony, a jumping castle and art exhibitions.

Another classic Australia Day swim, Aquathon, is back for 2022 with festivities being held in Wollongong Harbour to celebrate the event.

Victoria

Make your way down to the Australia Day markets at Bendigo Racecourse, grab a snag at the free barbecue and enjoy the live entertainment at Golden Square Pool. Or start your day with a free breakfast and musical performances at the Rotary Club of Eaglehawk.

From 10:30am at the Civic Green in Warrnambool you can watch Aussies become Australian citizens in the office ceremony and citizenship awards, accompanied by plenty of festivities.

Tasmania

Head to Bruny Island to enjoy the music, stalls and entertainment at Adventure Bay; if you’re up further north there’s the George Town Australia Day Pool Party; and if you’re north-west, try Smithton’s annual Duck Race and Duck Dash events and fireworks.

In Latrobe you can try your hand at anything from archery to whip-cracking, sheaf-tossing and the hurdy-gurdy at Henley-on-Mersey festival at Bells Parade.

ACT

Enjoy a range of Aboriginal performances, live music and martial arts at the We Are One Australia Day concert in Narra Peace Park, peruse the Australia Day markets at the Harmonie German Club of Canberra or check out the Australia Day Cultural Program at Weston Community Hub, which showcases Aboriginal and Asian cultures.
