Tony Quarmby: General Manager, Tourism Northern Territory

What do you recommend as a day trip for tourists to Darwin?

I’m always surprised that something so obvious to us locals often gets overlooked by visitors. Litchfield National Park is just a 90-minute drive, so perfect for a day trip.

Although Litchfield’s waterfalls are a must-do, my favourite spots are: Sandy Creek (need a 4WD) and Green Ant for the walk. For a swim and easy walk combo, it’s got to be Wangi Falls.

For an overnight option there are a range of places to stay. One of those is the Hideaway cabins – these tiny houses are the perfect short-stay option to allow you to maximise the time across all the different waterfalls, rock pools, walking tracks and nature experiences.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Territory holiday without a stop off for a pub lunch on the way home. Berry Springs Tavern is on the way back to Darwin and

for me it’s a toss up between the ribs or a steak for lunch … I always say I’ll try something different but end up with one of my two faves.

What’s you top travel tip?

Always allow more time than you think you need. Whether you’re driving, walking or touring, always allow for stops and diversions. There are few worse holiday regrets than missing out on something incredible because you didn’t have a spare hour or two.
