Step aside Sydney and Melbourne. The World's 50 Best Hotels list has been announced, with just one Australian entry on it, and it's not from the NSW or the Victorian capital.

Located in the heart of Brisbane's achingly cool James Street precinct, The Calile has been ranked number 12 in the world - no small feat considering that not a single eatery in Australia makes it to the World's 50 Best Restaurants list, run by the same UK-based media outfit. Having stayed at the hotel, we can confidently say its chic pool and Amalfi-meets-Palm-Springs interiors are totally deserving of the honour.

But if you want to travel further afield, here's our pick of five other hotels on the list that are worth flying for: the Passalacqua - complete with Baroque elegance - in Lake Como at number one; the lofty Upper House in Hong Kong at number four; the pared back Park Hyatt in Kyoto at number 30; the out-there Atlantis the Royal in Dubai at number 44; and the game-changing designer hotel Equinox in New York at number 48.

Meanwhile, if you're contemplating booking a cruise, lets us assure you, there's never a dull moment in the world of voyages. Oceania Cruises has just announced seven sailings to French Polynesia and Hawaii for the summer of 2025, with itineraries going on sale on October 4. The journeys will unfold onboard the chic, boutique Regatta vessel, with accommodation for just 670 guests, and we all know the best staterooms are the first to go, so don't tell us later we didn't give you a heads up.

My all-time favourite destination is ... New York. You can drop a pin anywhere in Manhattan and start walking in any direction, and the sights and sounds of the city that never stops will begin to stimulate all your senses in an instant.
Next on my bucket list is … Scandinavia - at the peak of summer, when the sun almost never sets.
My top travel tip is … If you’re flying to Sydney from anywhere in the world, pick a window seat far from the wing on the left-hand-side of the aeroplane. If the weather gods and flight path align, you’ll have the most incredible views of the Sydney Harbour and Opera House.
