They are a sweet with a bitter history. Made only in the village of Dolceacqua, Liguria, and protected by a Municipal Designation of Origin, the michetta is a small sweet bun representing women's privates. Our B&B hostess Bettina serves them at breakfast. One morning, as she puts down the plate, she asks me if I know their history, then recounts a story that stretches my Italian so thin I have to fact-check later to confirm I've understood correctly.
